Personal Narrative - My Dad, Formally Known as Superhero :: Personal Narrative Writing

My Dad, Formally Known as Superhero At the point when I was twelve, I began fasting on Yom Kippur. That was the year I had my Bat Mitzvah and the year I turned into a Jewish lady. In the couple of years before I turned twelve, I ate sparingly on that holiest day - no lousy nourishment, no morning meal. What's more, in the years prior to that, I ate anything I desired. My mother as well. She's not Jewish - she coincidentally married my Jewish father. My father consistently fasted. He'd go to Temple in the first part of the day, and we'd go with him - me, my sister, and my mother. My sister was a child, and I sat on the floor and shaded my shading books on the metal seat I should be sitting in, which satisfied my folks since I didn't make clamor. At one or something like that, we'd leave Temple and commute home. The vehicle windows would be moved up close, securing in the beams of the early evening sun, and I would loll, free and alive, spruced up and absorbing the daylight. The daylight truly appears to be unique in the exceptionally center of the day. At the point when we returned home, my mother would make me a tidbit, and I'd go off and play or something. I don't generally recollect. My father would snooze, or read. I do recall that. He was unpleasant on Yom Kippur. A couple of years after the fact, I figure I more likely than not been around nine. We returned home from Temple, and the kitchen was lit by that hot and yellow late morning daylight. Our striped window ornaments hung energetically. My father set down on the lounge love seat and got his book, and my mother flipped through certain papers on the kitchen table. Or on the other hand possibly she was first floor. It doesn't make a difference. I opened the cooler and pulled out the organic product cabinet at the base. There were four granny smiths lying in pause. I picked the best one and flushed it in the sink. It was the greatest, the roundest, the firmest. The grassiest green. It vowed to be the juiciest. I snatched the towel from the stove entryway and dried it. I slid on my socks over the kitchen floor and into the family room and bit down, hard. It was a tremendous chomp. An immense cruncher! That chomp reverberated around the entire house - into the rooms and into the restrooms; it assaulted my father on the lounge chair, and presumably even soared the neighbors.

Where as when we talk about work force the executives than we are additionally discussing the staff other than administrators, which doesn't go under HR office, for example, work power, which is in contact with the director who is liable for the work dealings, anyway that supervisor has an immediate connection with human asset division. Further more the human asset the board isn't just constrained to the worker relations with a specific goal in mind however it is a finished procedure that makes it so much confused and intriguing, it has an immense extension and destinations which are additionally identified with the association in which individuals are working, not normal for faculty the executives which is identified with individuals working for the association as it were. The human asset has certain targets with out which there would be no need of it, there are four sorts of destinations, Organizational Objective, the hierarchical adequacy is the key issue here, its primary occupation is to distinguish the way that is there any administration leaving or not Then comes Functional Objective, here HR work is to recognize and keep up the degree of commitment comparable to the association's needs, at that point comes Societal Objective, here the activity of HR is to satisfy the necessities of the general public regardi ng being morally and socially mindful in meeting the difficulties looked by the general public, at that point the last one is Personal Objective, it is thought to be the center reason for HR and that is to help representatives in arriving at their own objectives and helping and guaranteeing their commitment in the accomplishment of the association it self. Further more HRM is having different entangled procedures, for example, choice and enlistment process, which is unquestionably identified with the representatives yet more significantly the organization is discovering individuals for its own advantage, here the organization isn't dealing with the individuals however simply checking their measures whether they can work or not, so the attention is on the association's advancement, another procedure is worker preparing and improvement, here the organization has some goal in dealing with the faculty yet the principle concerns are for the association's greatness, different procedures a re representative remuneration and motivating forces which shows a connection between human asset and staff the board, these all are highlighting the way that it is an exceptionally immense and confounded field where as faculty the executives has a constrained part to play in the whole human asset the board. Where are you going, where have you been (Part I)

Where are you going, where have you been (Part I) Part I: Academics You do know that MIT is unlike almost any other college in the country, right?. A few months ago I was cooking dinner with my boyfriend and he was telling me about his visit to UCSC. He had gone to see a friend from high school who was either a junior or a senior there and was blown away by the setting. Absolutely beautiful, it was exactly his kind of place, too. Full of a very wholesome, very natural beauty. Everywhere was mountains and trees and ocean and hippies. She had spent several days showing him and a few others around, introducing them to her favorite trees and caves and perches from which to view the sunset. And at night there was always something to do. Parties with friends and bonfires in true collegiate style. Wow, sounds perfect, like a movie, I said. Yeah, he thought so too, but then she said something strange. Toward the end of his visit, shed asked, What are you supposed to learn in college, anyhow? By his account she is an intelligent girl with a good head on her shoulders. Shes had a picture-perfect time at UCSC so far but couldnt shake the feeling that she was missing out on something. So she pulled him aside, at a house party I think, and said, Do you feel like youve learned anything in college? She was genuinely curious. I dont know if I have. My boyfriends a physics major, like me. He was my junior lab partner second semester, if you remember. He didnt know what to say. So he told me this, and I dropped what I was doing. Wow, I cant even imagine what thats like, I said. I realized soon after that that wasnt the case. I know exactly what thats like. To miss out on something, that is. I know all about waking up in the morning to a boston day in the spring, one of those rare ones with the power to obliterate all memory of even the tough as rocks New England winter and life is just bursting out of every crack and crevice in a great green flood. On those days Ive open my windows wide, picked out an outfit with a smile on my face, packed up my things and stepped outside in a t-shirt and my favorite skirt thinking this sun is exactly what I need so today I take the outside, round-a-bout way to the library and promise that when Im done and theres still sun, Ill walk into town or maybe Ill bike across the river, either way I need the exercise and I could use the getting away from this place. And how many days have Ive sat until my butt was sore and finally given up at 11, or 1 or 2, with these daytime thoughts long gone from my head now stuffed full of the t hings my text book says and wondering, how did it get so cold out and why didnt I bring a jacket. I look up at a black sky with a spattering of stars and I remember back to freshman year when I felt so tough and so proud that this is what Ive become, but now at this moment, Im cold, Im thinking, Man, if only I were in California. and Im moving out there as soon as I graduate. How do you know when you have to choose? I didnt know that I was choosing. How do you know, with things so bright and so bleak, that this is what you have to choose? I didnt really know what I was choosing. Then how do you know youve made the right choice? That, theres no question about that. First, I imagine what it would have been like if I had missed out on 4 relaxing, beautiful years of my youth, a 4-year party, my boyfriend called it (You do realize MIT is unlike almost any other college in the country, right?). Thats easy, because I have, so I know. I think about it and for the most part it amuses me, that I didnt have this experience. It makes me a little sad, but mostly, it makes me want to take a couple years off between college and grad school (haha). Then, I try to imagine what it would have been like to have had all that, to have been carefree, to have gone out every night, to have missed out on this education. It doesnt even compare.

A three-step formula for rejuvenating family business in the age of complexity

Six decades of living for many individuals used to spur thoughts of applying the brakes to the speed of life, particularly working life. But recently, many who have completed what statistics would say is two-thirds of a hopeful lifespan are eager to launch their third thirty. The intention is to forge on, to create anew, to own big change—to, well, continue. They pursue a third slice of life. The same pivotal juncture holds true for the lifespan of family businesses, as it does for todays determined individual prolongers. They both share a deep desire to continue. But opposing forces are on the rise. Family businesses are not constrained by the same biological clock as individuals. Some centennials  have forged on for hundreds of years. But when considering the typical shelf life of most commercial enterprises, those few multi-generational family enterprises that carry on so long are sheer marvels to us. Consider what they are up against. Only a third of entrepreneurs who successfully launch (those in their first slice of commercial life) are able to pass the baton to the second generation. And a mere single-digit percentage of those launchers ever get to enjoy the rites of passage to the third. Those surviving beyond that are a rare lot: the lucky, the great, and the marvels. Only a third of entrepreneurs who successfully launch are able to pass the baton to the second generation. Rare because the shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves saying that every culture in the world knows and expresses in its own linguistic way tells the tale of the common three-generational cycle of birth and ultimate demise that befalls most family businesses. What entrepreneurially started as ownership became stewardship, and from that, and often lastly, custodianship. You can feel the declining life force from the labels themselves. Is there nothing that can be done today to overcome the harsh truth of the old phrase, to take a page from the marvels who have, and to just plain continue? The answer to the question contains both good news and bad news. On the dark side, family businesses have always faced internal and external threats. Although applied coaching methods are indeed helping the cause, the foibles of people being people, and the inordinate difficulty of foibled people managing foibled people has been and always will be the commercial-life threatening force on the inside of things. But it is on the outside where the big trouble lies. And the really bad news is that the trouble is only getting bigger. In an evolving universe, nothing remains the same, of course. But it is the accelerating pace of change itself that worries me for the many family businesses we serve at Newport Board Group. The frenzied reality of rapid change is spawning a new phrase so powerful that it could displace shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves. And this phrase is one that business operators actually say out loud—and say with growing regularity: I didnt see that coming. Complexity theory is helping to explain how and why we now come to say this so often. Complex systems—and a family business is a perfect example of one, as is the worldwide economy within which it competes—feature increasingly diverse, connected, and inter-dependent components that adapt. When the diversity increases, when the number of connections expand, and when the learning quickens we get large, unanticipated events. We get the sudden emergence of new phenomenon. We get change we didnt see coming. Keeping pace externally with rapidly changing customer expectations as well as competitive disruption bears down upon what were once reasonable market expectations. Annual budget? Try quarterly. And the old timeless phrase itself is under pressure. Unless we take right action before long we could be looking at just plain shirtsleeves—connoting a family business state that knows no transition to the next. But hold on because here is the hopeful bit: family businesses are not out of options in the great struggle to continue. Here are three initial steps that business founders and 2nd generation leaders should immediately consider: 1.  Forge an emergence of your own, within your business Wise family business owners have long insisted that younger family members gain experience working in other companies before joining the family business. Or to pursue an MBA first to learn the objective craft of business. In this age of complexity, a new form of family-business wisdom is dawning. And that is to foster the next generations pursuit of the entrepreneurial. To fund and support their starting something new—something that rings closer to whom they are and what they love to do. Tip:  Have the Family Office declare a suitable funding provision and call for a patient but real standard of performance to be attained. A new form of family-business wisdom is dawning. And that is to foster the next generations pursuit of the entrepreneurial. 2. Create the blended family business Fostering the next generations entrepreneurship need not mean shortening the lifespan of the current business. By all means, continue with what works. I provide advisory service to third generation players who connect genuinely with the business they inherited. Tip:  In renewing entrepreneurship, look for a cohering thread—a new golden mean which connects the interest of the players, the business models, the familys stated values, and ideally the customers to be served. 3. Practice commercial Aikido To give vocal and financial support for the regeneration of the family business within each succeeding generation, and not just in the third or fourth generation on the brink of business failure, is to embrace the forces of complexity that abound today. Like Aikido, which leverages the power of the opposing force, family businesses need to become their own generative source of I didnt see that coming—as expressed by their competitors and customers alike. Tip: As we may think of the core business as operating more with exploit (garner returns) than explore (defer returns), to use the language of complexity theory, foster the inverse balance with your next-gen springboards. If we are going to make the shirtsleeves phrase irrelevant to our own family business story, let us go for another slice of business life. In this age of complexity, to create is to continue, and to continue is to create. If we truly foster that spirit within our family business, what marvels we may yet become. If we are going to make the shirtsleeves phrase irrelevant to our own family business story, let us go for another slice of business life. The Disparities Between Races And Ethnicities - 1244 Words

All men are created equal yet the glaring disparities between races and ethnicities say otherwise. The African American demographic of America has the lowest poverty rate and household income than all other races and ethnicities. The statistics about African American poverty are staggering in regards to more than just unemployment, food insecurity, and nutrition. In the 21st century, decades after the civil war and desegregation, and with such a diverse population, the poverty in our country still pertains to race and the color of our skin. The following paragraphs will explicate the various distinctions in socioeconomic statuses of the African American and white populations of America. African Americans have the highest poverty rate at 27.4%. The consequences faced by those under the poverty line are disconcerting. The organization, Feeding America, reports that 26% of African American households suffer from food insecurity, which is more than twice compared to the 11% of Caucasian households. 93% of counties that possess an African American majority population fall into the top 10% of counties with the highest rates of food insecurity. Also, African Americans are more likely to be uninsured than any other race or ethnicity. The younger generation of African Americans is also severely affected by poverty. 45.8% of young black children reside under the poverty line where as only 14.5% of white children do. Unfortunately, black children are at a socioeconomic disadvantage that makes them more vulnerable than any other racial groups to live in areas of highly concentrated poverty where they are at greater risks of being involved with or exposed to violence leading to psychological issues later in life. 52.1% of black children live in single parent homes as the rate of marriage among the African American demographic has seen a steep decline during the recession compared to the white population. African American children are less likely to have proper nutrition and immunization. For these children, concentration on education is often

Traditional And Utilitarian Approaches To The Euthyphro...

Traditional And Utilitarian Approaches To The Euthyphro Dilemma In the Euthyphro, Plato describes the proceedings of a largely circular argument between Socrates and Euthyphro, a self-declared prophet and pious man, over the nature of piety and even of the gods themselves. The issues raised in this dialogue have been reinterpreted and extended to remain relevant even with a modern theological framework, so much so that the central issue is now known simply as ?the Euthyphro dilemma.? This is based on Socrates? two-way choice which he offers in the dialogue: Consider this: Is the pious being loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is being loved by the gods? (10a) In the context of the dialogue, this†¦show more content†¦There is no big agreement in the modern monotheist camp as to which half of the dilemma to choose; for example, Descartes chose the big-scary-unknowable-god option (Ill refer to that as Option 1) and Saadia Gaon fell firmly into the good-came-before-god camp (Option 2) (Rich 1, Solomon 36). However, there are clearly problems with choosing either side if you want a traditional God; it is a dilemma, after all. The assumptions that cause the dilemma to be so problematic are more or less: a) God is omnipotent, b) God is good, and c) God is like the Biblical God; God is knowable in some sense, and we can form meaningful relationships with Him (or Her, to be PC). For simplicitys sake we will just deal with the Old Testament, since both Jews and Christians accept it and it prevents us having to delve into the finer points of Trinitarian theology. Assumption a is pretty much a fair assumption in modern discussions of God. If God were not omnipotent then we have no real use for Him; He cant be counted on 100% to deliver on a promise, and whatever transcends God may be more worthy of our attention than God is (in our example, it might be goodness). The same is true of assumption b; a non-good God is more or less useless to us; after all, he may strike us down at a whim or reward the evil with an eternal heaven. That is, a or b

Booking letters Essay Example For Students

Booking letters Essay A State chart shows all the possible states of a class, from the start to the end. In each of the states, the action is also labeled. UML uses state charts to model states and state dependent behaviour for objects and for interactions. A state chart can be seen as a description of all the possible life cycles that an object of a class may follow. It can also be seen as a more detailed view of a class. There is an important link between interaction diagrams and state charts: the interaction diagrams captures the responses of all the objects, that are involved in a single use case. A state chart captures all the possible responses of a single object, to all the use cases in which it is involved. 1. Customer A new customer must be created before any other actions can be carried out. When a customer is created, an estimate can then be requested which then needs to be assessed and sent to either an external surveyor or internal employee. After the estimate is completed, a formal letter will be sent to the customer. If no response is received from customers after five weeks, a reminder letter is sent. The customer will then send a response detailing their acceptance or rejection. 2. Employee The status of the employees is checked, whether they have been hired or fired. Any newly hired employees will then be added. The employees are then assigned to jobs that are ready. 3. Estimate Either an outside surveyor or a company employee carries out an estimate. The availability of the surveyor/employee is checked. Once they are available, the booking is confirmed and their name is entered onto the booking sheet. The booking sheet is used to draw up booking letters to send to surveyors confirming the details of the estimate required. The surveyor will produce a report of the completed estimate, which is used for a formal estimate letter to be sent to the customer. If the customer shows acceptance, new jobs would then be created. 4. Job The supplier is contacted for an order to be placed. All the necessary materials will need to be collected in order for the job to be ready to be started. After all the materials have been received, the job begins and the tasks are carried out. The job progress is monitored and will be completed once all the tasks have been completed. 5. Materials An order line needs to be created for any building material required for a particular task. As the materials arrive, they are collected. When no more material needs to collected, they are sent and the job is ready to begin. 6. Order A new order is created and items are added until no more are required. Once all of the items are added, the order is processed. After the order is submitted, the delivery is awaited from the supplier. 7. Store File A new order must be created. After the materials needed are selected and ordered, they will be stored once received. 8. Supplier The supplier is contacted with new orders, once they receive orders they update their files and finish orders in time for the job to begin. 9. Task A new job is created and then divided into smaller tasks. Once each task is allocated to an appropriately skilled employee, it is begun. The tasks are continued until the job is complete. These include the entering of new customer details and the requesting of estimates that can be done in an extremely simple method. Also other sections include the ordering of materials for the jobs and also the allocating of tasks to employees and surveyors with a list of whos available or not in a single screen, which will save the manager the task of providing a list and also increase efficiency in all aspects of the organizations activities. Some reports were created as a sample of what may be possible bur future investment in a database, that would add extra functionality to your site. As this is only a prototype only a couple of reports were designed that may be of use to Ernest Naylor. Conclusion We hope that this report has developed on your understanding of the system and provided a basis for any further investigation that may be needed before valuable resources are invested in a full working database based on the prototype presented. For a medium sized construction company, a small database such as the prototype shown can increase overall efficiency and competitiveness in the market place by investing in an electronic storage and retrieval system. Other benefits include; speed of access, minimised duplication of data, user friendly interface, faster processing for your estimation and allocating of tasks, as well as ordering materials. If an expansion of your company was to take place in the following years, the new system would be able to handle any new changes to the administrative tasks without the need for massive changes in the database structure. Some of the requirements by the employees of Ernest Naylor have been met, however, all have not been implemented as of this time but can be implemented in the future if a greater time frame is allowed to develop the database. This is due to it being a prototype designed to give a demonstration of the future possibilities. Bibliography Douglas B. P, (1999). As a result, the regional customers have showed their intense dissatisfaction regarding the customer service process of Gandhi Pulse Mill. In order to overcome this kind of situation, the production managers of Gandhi Pulse Mill have decided to produce more products by keeping the quality and quantity of ingredients same. As a result, the product quality has seriously been decreased due to these factors. Background of the research: Gandhi Pulse Mill has already become recognizable as one of the most recognizable suppliers handling 2200 valuable customers both in region and in abroad. This particular business firm is constituted with three big warehouses where large amounts of pulse products have been manufactured. On one hand, service providers are facing difficulties for making a balance between supply and demand; on the other, the production managers fail to concentrate to maintain quality of products. As a result, the reliable customers are showing their reluctance for purchasing products and services of Gandhi Pulse Mill. Other competitors such as Raja Pulse Mill, Jayesh Pulse mill and Ganpati Pulse Mill have become a major threat for this particular firm (Amit and Zott 2012). The organizational image and reputation has seriously been affected due to the lack of effective customer service system in the regional market. Objective of the research proposal: This particular research proposal will aim to focus on achieving some of the major objectives. These are as follows: To critically evaluate the importance of maintaining product quality for a business organization To focus on maintaining a balance between supply and demands To critically understand on how business firms would be able to provide effective customers services to both the regional customers as well as the outside stakeholders To give an effective recommendation on how to maintain effective customer relation with the organization Situation analysis: After identifying the research issue, an effective situational analysis can be conducted in order to know the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of the organization. SWOT Analysis Description Strength v Advancement of technology in order to provide effective product in limited times v Sufficient organizational financial resources Weakness v Insufficient number of workforce to maintain a balance between customers supply and demand v Reducing the quality of products and services after expanding the process of business Opportunity v This particular business organization is possessed with immense opportunities to promote their products and services in multinational countries v In order to re-gain the organizational image and reputation, the responsible persons such as organizational managers have the scope to maintain an effective balance between customer supply and demand of the products. Threat v Competitors market strategies and policies have become one of the major threats for surviving in the competitive market v Ignoring the demands of regional customers for satisfying outside stakeholders by exporting products will become a major threat if the international stakeholders tend to stop using products of Gandhi Pulse Mill Table 1: SWOT Analysis (Source: Becker, Kugeler and Rosemann 2013) Proposed theory: Gandhi Pulse Mill after facing immense organizational challenges while maintaining a balance between supply and demand the business managers should implement some of the major business theories and models in order to overcome the static situation. Supply theory can be considered as one of the most appropriate business theory for dealing with this kind of organizational challenges (Dunning 2015). As per this particular business theory, the business experts of Gandhi Pulse Mill should produce the products to the doorstep of customers at a reasonable price within the limited time. Customers should never wait for a long time in order to get an effective service of the products. In addition, the theory of production would also be effective in order to overcome this business issue as well. As per this particular theory, it has been observed that the production managers have to focus on both prices of commodities as well as the prices of productive factors (Goetsch and Davis 2014). The price of a particular product is highly dependent on the prices fixed by the commodities. Gandhi Pulse Mill should focus on the raw materials that are provided by the suppliers. Product quality is highly dependent on the raw materials (Mok, Sparks and Kadampully 2013). Therefore, the production managers should never compromise with the commodity price so that customer can raise complaint regarding the product quality. Data resources: Data collection procedure is a systematic method with the help of which a large number of data can be collected from various resources (Yinan, Tang and Zhang 2014). Data can be collected from two primary sources that include primary source of data and secondary source of data. Primary source of data can be gathered from various surveys, interviews, group discussions and many more. On the other hand, secondary source of data can be collected from various books, magazines, journals, online websites and many more. This particular research proposal would focus on both primary and secondary source of data collection procedure (Powell and DiMaggio 2012). An effective survey would be conducted by involving 50 local customers of Gandhi Pulse Mill. They would provide necessary response to the data analysts on how the customers have faced ineffective service procedures on behalf of the service providers of Gandhi Pulse Mill. Along the quantitative data analysis, qualitative data would also be used in this research proposal (Ryu, Lee and Gon Kim 2012). Five business managers would be involved from Gandhi Pulse Mill in order to provide an effective interview on how the organization has faced challenges for regaining their business market. In order to collect secondary source of data case study analysis would be conducted Based on a particular case study on the organizational challenges of Gandhi Pulse Mill, data and information would be collected. Risk analysis: Risk analysis is the systematic procedure with the help of which risk factors can be identified before implementing business strategy and policy (Sallis 2014). In this particular research proposal, business experts should analysis the risk factors before implementing supply theory within the process of business (Wirtz et al. 2013). In addition, before using two methods of data collections, probable risk factors can be identified. Expected outcome: As the research is going to use both the primary and secondary data, it can be expected that the result of the research will be all-inclusive. As mentioned in the objectives of the research, it can be expected that the result of this research will explore that positive relationship pattern of the customer interaction needs to be maintained for sustainable demand and supply relation. Moreover, it can be expected that the research will explain that the organizations failure of understanding the market demand and providing the products according will direct them to face market failure. This particular research has a focus on the variables of positive customer relationship and satisfaction. Hence, it can be predicted that by exploring the causes of failure, the important aspects of customer satisfaction will be explored. However, it can also not be ignored that by utilizing both the primary and secondary data, the research may face complexities in data analysis process, which may lead to ineffective and unauthentic research outcome. In addition to this, as the research will be solely concentrated on the outcomes of the selected organization, the research result may not have much scope to be utilized in the context of other organizations. The Value of Higher Education free essay sample

For many individual students preparing to graduate from high school, wondering whether or not they should pursue a higher education at a university or other learning institute is an issue that weighs heavily on their minds. It is a very difficult decision that depends on many different factors, such as the individual’s personal goals. Some students choose to go straight from high school directly into the workforce after graduating. Other students choose to go into the military after graduating from high school. While these are all different options, recent research indicates that higher education is extremely valuable. Recent research indicates that higher education is extremely valuable. For, individuals whom attended a university and obtained at least a four-year bachelor’s degree make more money on average than people who have never obtained a university degree according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a study conducted by the United States Bureau of Labor conducted in 2009, it was concluded that someone with a four-year bachelor’s degree makes on average $20,748 more per year than someone without the degree. We will write a custom essay sample on The Value of Higher Education or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In a report done by the United States Census Bureau published in the â€Å"Current Population Report† by ?Jennifer Cheeseman Day and? Eric C. Newburger, it is estimated that high school graduates earn on average $1.2 million throughout the course of a lifetime. It is also estimated in the report that individuals with a bachelors degree will earn on average $2.1 million total throughout their lifetime. As you can see, the facts show that getting a higher education is worth more value financially than stopping an education after graduating from high school. In addition to the high financial value of higher education, higher education also makes individuals much more intelligent than what they would be with just a high school education. The more intelligent an individual is, the better quality of life they are likely to have. In â€Å"Wechslers Measure and Appraisal of Adult Intelligence, 5th Edition† by Joseph D. Matarazzo, Matarazzo states that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of a high school graduate is 105 points. He also states that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of a college four-year graduate is 115 points. To quote Sociologist Linda Gottfredson of the University of Deleware, â€Å"IQ scores predict a wider range of important social outcomes than perhaps any other psychological trait; bright people have a tail wind in virtually all aspects of life.† What she means by this quote is that the higher an individual’s intelligence quotient, the higher the quality of life that they will have. This is true because those with higher intelligent quotients have higher problem solving abilities that correlate to better life qualities. In an Australian study studied by Gottfredson, motor vehicle fatalities were studied, correlating intelligence quotients with motor vehicle fatalities. In the study, there was a direct correlation discovered between those with lower intelligence quotients, and higher death rates per 10,000 people. Ian Deary of the University of Edinburgh, in the United Kingdom did another study that shows how those individuals with higher intelligence quotients have higher qualities of life than those with lower intelligence quotients. For his study, he looked into the childhood intelligence quotient scores of a group of 80 year olds. In his study, he found that those who scored the highest on their childhood intelligence quotient tests were also the healthiest at age 80. These studies serve as evidence that having a higher intelligence quotient improves the qua lity of your life. College students who graduate with at least a Bachelor’s degree have on average higher intelligence quotients than those students who didn’t attend college, which means that those students who do graduate college with a degree will have a better quality of life than those who don’t. Another reason why getting a higher education is very valuable is because it offers many new opportunities to students that they would be unable to get without having attended a university. Most, if not all, universities and other higher education systems offer many activities in which students will get to meet many other new students. Many students will meet new friends who often become some of the best friends that they’ve ever had. There are also almost always sports, clubs, and other activities to get involved with that would be unavailable to those not attending a higher education system. Many people participate on sports teams in high school such as football, baseball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, wrestling, track and field, and softball, to name a few. After they graduate high school they do not have many opportunities to participate in their favorite sports ever again. Whether it is for competitive purposes or just for enjoyment purposes, universities offer the o pportunities to participate in some of their past favorite sports, or experiment with new ones. Another opportunity that students of higher education systems have exposure to that those who do not attend higher education systems do not have as readily available is the opportunity to study abroad. Studying abroad means taking educational classes in a country other than one’s own. Unless they are particularly financially wealthy, the majority of the individuals that do not attend higher education systems never get the opportunity to live in foreign countries for the entire length of a semester. According to a BBC news report, about 114,000 higher education system students study abroad each year at universities in foreign countries. Studying abroad is a great opportunity for higher education system students to take advantage of. When one studies abroad, they get the chance to learn about another culture through first hand experience, they get the chance to learn how to fluently speak a foreign language by merely being exposed to it for a period of time, and it is very pres tigious to have on a resume. Author W.E.B. DuBois among other successful celebrities studied abroad. He studied at the university of Berlin in Germany for two years. Studying abroad is just another example of a way that higher education systems give their students more opportunities than those who do not attend them. Higher education systems can also be considered very valuable because they provide individuals with life skills that are essential to being successful in life. While studying at a higher education system, one is forced to develop essential time management skills much more so than at the high school level. With time needed for studying, attending classes, completing homework, relaxation, and doing fun things as well, one needs to manage their time in order to avoid failing out. These time management skills help out individuals later on in life. Another important life skill that individuals who attend higher education systems gain is money management skills. Some higher education system students work part-time jobs, but the majority are unable to find the time to do so on top of their schoolwork, so the only money they have for spending is either money their parents give to them, or money that they saved up before going to college. Either way, most students are on tight financial budg ets that require discipline to maintain. Students learn to only spend money on things that they absolutely need, and to save up their money rather than spending it all at once. These money management skills help the students later in life. While attending a higher education system offers many positives, it also offers certain negatives. One negative is the fact that higher education schools are often very expensive. Colleges are expensive, and it is hard for a lot of families to afford to pay for, however this is not a good reason for not attending. If one starts early enough, they can save money, look into financial aide opportunities, and apply for scholarship opportunities to help pay for their tuition. It has already been shown that the amount of money that college students will make after graduation is much higher than the amount of money those who do not attend will make, so if someone can make sacrifices in order to pay for college then when they have a career someday they will make it all back plus more. Another negative to going straight to a higher education system is that people are getting later starts to their careers. Some people choose to work minimum wage jobs, or take other opportunities like opening their own businesses. These options are all respectable, and sometimes do end up making people large sums of money, but the facts given to us by the United States Bureau of Labor show that the vast majority of the time this is not the case. No matter how tempting it may be to take a good wage job right after high school, it is always more financially beneficially to attend a higher education system. In conclusion, the evidence shows us that attending higher education systems is extremely valuable. One reason that it is extremely valuable is that it offers many great financial benefits. Another reason is that it makes individuals more intelligent. Those who attend higher education systems also have more opportunities available to them than those who do not attend them. Attending higher education systems also teach great skills that are essential for being successful in life. In short, higher education systems are extremely valuable

Why You Shouldnt Start Your Cover Letter With To Whom It May Concern

Why You Shouldnt Start Your Cover Letter With To Whom It May Concern You’ve found the job you want. You’ve got your resume all set up, now you just need to write that cover letter.   Keep in mind that your cover letter is your first impression. And the first impression of your first impression is how you open up your letter! You’ll want to make it as effective as possible by tailoring your salutation to its appropriate audience- without offending anyone or showing bias of any kind.Rule 1: If you’re not writing to a particular committee or individual avoid the  dreaded impersonal â€Å"To Whom It May Concern.† Also, steer clear of  the generic â€Å"Dear Sir or Madam,† which is just hopelessly bland.Use What You KnowIf you know exactly who will be reading your letter, address it personally! Really. It’s okay. â€Å"Dear John Smith† will work. If you happen to know that your reader is a doctor or has a PhD, try â€Å"Dear Dr. Smith† instead. OR if you know the company culture to be on the informal side, and you’re sure it won’t backfire: â€Å"Dear John† might do.If the â€Å"Dear† freaks you out, you can drop it entirely and just use the name, or you could try â€Å"Hello† instead. When in doubt, though, use â€Å"Dear.†Do Your ResearchIf you don’t know the hiring manager or the person most likely to receive your letter, you could guess. Do a bit of Googling and at least find the head of the department you’re applying to. Even if you shoot for higher up than the person who eventually receives your letter, you’ll still get points for initiative. If You Can’t Find a Name, Try a TitleThe point is to be as specific as possible. If names are unavailable, you can always try â€Å"Dear Senior Analyst Search Committee† or â€Å"Research Assistant Hiring Manager† instead. For that matter, if you know you will be addressing a committee, a simple â€Å"Dear Search Committee† or  "Dear Hiring Committee† will do nicely. Read through the job description for hints- often it will include the name of the committee or department explicitly. When in doubt, err on the side of formal. And never gender a general salutation. â€Å"Ladies and gentlemen† could work. But often guessing on the position/manger/committee will net you more favorable results.Remember, this is your first impression in a letter that serves as an overall first impression. Don’t blow it in the very first line.

My Developmental Narrative Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

My Developmental Narrative - Essay Example So in a way, college studies for me have become a vacation in a way. But it is only a vacation in terms of the exacting standards of the educational institution that I am enrolled in. Having all of my classes in English now presents me with a different kind of tension and stress level. My English speaking and written skills are not as excellent as I wish as they could be but I somehow manage to get by in class. After all, I was raised in a highly disciplined country with a track record for academic excellence. So it comes as no surprise that I am able to adapt to my surroundings whenever the need arises. I have found that as a college student, I have come to mature immensely. I no longer view my studies as an activity that takes away from my time that I had allotted for having fun. Maybe it was because I was being forced to study lessons that I had no interest in at the time. As a college student, I finally have the chance to study things that are of interest to me. So I find studyin g more fascinating and useful now. These days, I view my education as a means to achieving a goal instead of a burden like I did in high school. Remember how as a child, we are reliant on our parents for everything? We follow everything that we are told to do without asking questions because we believe that they know best for us. Then we become teenagers and the friction begins to increase as we slowly develop into our own persona that is a far cry from what our parents expect of us. The same thing happened to me in regards to my relationship with my parents. From being a clingy child who asked mother to help me with even the smallest task, I have slowly become my own independent person who tends to question his parents when asked to do something. In fact, save for the few arguments that I have with my parents, I don't think that we really talked at all. I found them boring and an encumbrance in my daily life because of all the rules that they expected me to follow. There were more don'ts than there were do's coming from them when it came to living my life. So you can imagine how I too passed through the rebellious phase during high school. If I had a choice back then, I would rather not have my parents around me. But as I progressed in age, I found that my sentiments about my parents also changed as well. Perhaps it is because they loosened the controlling reins that they had on me before and allowed me to develop my own opinions and live my life, allowing me to learn from my mistakes but always being at the ready to help me recover from it if I ask them to. Now at I have spent a significant amount of time abroad as a university student. I cannot help but think about how it will affect my relationship with my parents. We were not close in the past and I am afraid that this move will further make us strangers to each other. I know that I will not see them as often as I used to anymore. Funny, I thought that not seeing them was exactly what I wanted in life. Bu t it turns out that a significant part of me misses them and the family relationship that we had. It is hard to miss your parents and not see them everyday because when you do see them, it seems like so much time has passed and they have aged a lot since you last saw them. The physical changes that they undergo are equivalent to the same changes that they see in me according to them. They are specially proud of the fact that I have become even
